Veterinary Compounding

"We love our pets"

Dr. Natalie Fisher, DVM
Town and Country Veterinary Clinics offering companion animal services in New Philadelphia and Bolivar

Many people treat their pets as if they are their children. Whatever your animal is, whether it’s a dog, cat, bird, horse, or deer, we know it is unique and special, and should be treated as such. Not all animals are the same which means not all medication for animals should be the same either.

Marlowe’s Compounding Center knows administering pet medications can be quite a challenge. For that reason, we work side by side with Veterinarians and pet owners to develop the best possible solution to get the medicine into your animals so they can get back to normal as soon as possible.

Many contributing factors have led to an increased need for Veterinary Compounding. For example, many drugs intended for humans can also be used for animals but must first be altered (compounded) to fit the size of the animal. Variation in size, breed and types of animals is taken into great consideration when creating compounded medicines.

Do a Chihuahua and a Golden Retriever require the same dose? Can a parrot take the same medication as a hamster? Will a specific drug have the same effect of a Lhasa Apso as it might on a Collie? At Marlowe’s Compounding Center we have all your answers. Getting your animal’s health heading in the right direction is our goal and we are glad to help.

Following is a personal note from Tuscarawas County’s Premier Veterinary Compounding Pharmacist to Veterinarians:

“As a specialty-compounding only pharmacist, it is my challenge to “get the medicine into the animal”. I accomplish this by changing the standard vehicle or making the oral form more palatable to the patient’s taste. For example, we make a very palatable beef flavored liquid version of Potassium Bromide in a 300mg/ml formula. A variety of doses can be ordered from that strength since we dispense it with an oral syringe to allow the owner to measure the dose you prescribe. We can also provide KBr in an oral capsule form using similar strengths.

For Hyperparathyroidism in cats, I compound Calcitriol (16ng per ml) in a liquid form for precise dosage and flavor it with my own “gourmet cat mix”, which according to owners, the felines just love. We can also make tuna or chicken.

To control excessive grooming and spraying of urine, I compound an Amitriptyline formula which can be rubbed on the pet’s ear and absorbed into the blood stream.

I love my compounding practice because I consider it the “Art and Science” of creating specialized medicines for individual patients. I have attended numerous Veterinary Symposiums where I learned the techniques necessary to compound for your four legged patients.

I look forward to helping you solve your patient’s special needs. If you have any questions about what we are capable of compounding, please don’t hesitate to call email.
